Renowned Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker addresses this contention in his book, 'The Language Instinct'. Fortunately, there is now enough accessible material about language in general and linguistics in particular for the general readers as to remove any excuse for ignorance. Interesting premise that comprehension of language is something we are born with a priori. This topic was my favourite in the book. Any learning that takes place is primarily in the area of vocabulary - since no two individual human languages use exactly the same words. My favorite explanation of the difference is Steven Pinker's, from The Language Instinct: a speeding taxi can break the laws of Massachusetts but not the laws of physics. Terence Deacon in PNAS (2010); Morten Christiansen & Nick Chater in BBS (2008); Mesoudi, Whiten . I've read so many summaries of The Language Instinct that a lot of the material seemed familiar, but that wasn't a problem as it's an extremely engaging read. I should, of course, have checked up on the original source. The club will be discussing The Language Instinct: How the Mind Creates Language, by Stephen Pinker. I managed to finally finish a book someone gave me for my birthday, The Language Instinct. Noam Chomsky with his Minimalist Program and Steven Pinker in books like his The Language Instinct argue that we humans have not simply a propensity to acquire language, but an instinct to do so. If I recall correctly, I originally found the quote in Steve Pinker's “The Language Instinct”, with no reference to Müller. One of the things I was able to do on my holiday was catch up on some reading. Stephen Pinker calls this ”mentalese” in his book The Language Instinct, and it's something that keeps coming back to me. Like Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct and Marc Hauser's Moral Minds, The Art Instinct is inspired by Noam Chomsky's vision of a universal grammar that underlies every spoken language, whatever its differences from every other. It explores how the newborns develop language skills and it was an amazing read. Children that grow up with more than one language develop this language instinct even further. We've seen the remarkable role of acacia trees in language evolution (Geraint 2011); now behold a case of parallel evolution towards a mutant quotation.
